Meet the Artist – Denny Wainscott
I'm Denny Wainscott, the creative force behind Morning Dew Gourds, and living proof that passion and craftsmanship can take root at any stage in life. As a native of Frankfort, Indiana, my connection to nature began early, nurtured by my grandfather, who taught me how to handcraft gourds into birdhouses. That childhood experience planted in me a lifelong appreciation for the countryside—one that would later blossom into a career as a gourd artist.
A Self-taught Artist With a Unique Vision
My journey into the art world was unconventional. After decades in corporate America, I made a bold decision at age 50 to leave behind a structured career and embrace my creative calling. With an electrical technician license and a BS degree in elementary education, I had no formal training in art—but my passion for working with natural materials and my dedication to craftsmanship led me to create extraordinary gourd sculptures.
From Humble Gourds to Timeless Art
Each of my pieces is carefully handcrafted, starting with handpicked gourds. I meticulously sketch designs before wood burning, carving, and inlaying natural gemstones such as turquoise, malachite, lapis, and mother of pearl. To bring my sculptures to life, I enhance each one with wood stains and leather dyes, giving them a rich and distinct character. My work often draws inspiration from Native American, African, and wildlife motifs, honoring the beauty of nature and cultural artistry.
A Life Rooted in Family and Exploration
Beyond my art, I find joy in teaching my six grandchildren the values of nature, fishing, and respect for the outdoors. I rarely miss their games—unless I’m traveling for an art show! Alongside my wife, Carol, I journey across the United States, sharing my passion and showcasing my one-of-a-kind gourd sculptures with collectors and art lovers nationwide.
